An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) sentenced former Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Chief Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Khalid Khurshid to 34 years in prison on Tuesday for threatening security agencies.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 600,000 and ordered his immediate arrest and transfer to jail. Additionally, the court instructed the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) to block his Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).
Khurshid, who served as GB’s chief minister before being disqualified in 2023, was charged for threatening the chief secretary of GB, the chief election commissioner, and security agencies during a PTI rally on May 26, 2024. An FIR was filed against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) at GB’s City Police Station. However, Khurshid failed to appear in court during the proceedings and remained a fugitive.
The former CM’s political career has been marred by controversy, including a disqualification in 2023 for presenting a fake degree. Despite joining PTI in 2018 and becoming the divisional president of Diamer-Astore, Khurshid has faced legal issues, including his involvement in party protests in Islamabad’s D-Chowk earlier this year.
