VHP media in-charge Sharad Sharma termed the remarks of SP Rajya Sabha MP and wife of renowned actor Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, as “unfortunate.” He said that such a statement by an MP holding a high post “is going to create instability in India.” “Police should arrest Jaya Bachchan for spreading sensation by giving false and untrue statements,” Sharma said.
According to Indian media, the Vishva Hindu Parishad leader was referring to Jaya Bachchan’s statement to the media, which she gave outside Parliament a day ago, where she reportedly stated, “thousands of dead bodies of devotees” were immersed in the Ganga in Prayagraj.
What is the Mahakumbh Stampede?
The Mahakumbh 2025 stampede occurred at Sangam Ghat in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India, during the Mauni Amavasya holy dip last week. The tragedy resulted in at least 30 deaths and several injuries due to overcrowding as millions of devotees gathered for the ritual, but mismanagement led to the deaths.
Causes of the Stampede
There were no exit routes after the holy dip or bathing. While moving around, large iron dustbins in the area caused people to trip and fall. Unexpected congestion blocked the movement of the crowd, leading to panic and causing further trouble. Many Hindu pilgrims carried large bags, which contributed to the chaos.
Over 1,000 medical professionals were deployed, with specialists at a super-specialty hospital for the treatment of stampede victims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed emergency aid for the victims. AI-powered CCTV cameras and drones were deployed for better monitoring of the situation.
Indian Railways continued operating 350 special trains to manage the flow of pilgrims, but all efforts were in vain after the loss of lives. The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, which oversees the religious rituals, initially postponed the holy dip but later resumed it after safety improvements were made.
