ISLAMABAD (17 June 2026): Electricity prices across Pakistan, including Karachi and other major cities, may increase by up to 82 paisa per unit as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) under the monthly fuel price adjustment for May 2026.
According to the CPPA, NEPRA will hear the case on 30 June. If approved, the proposed increase in electricity prices could place an additional financial burden of around Rs 12 billion on electricity consumers nationwide.
The CPPA stated that a total of 12.638 billion units of electricity were generated during May. The actual average fuel cost stood at Rs 9.25 per unit, compared to the estimated reference cost of Rs 8.43 per unit.
The generation mix for May showed that hydropower contributed the largest share at 33.27 percent. Local coal accounted for 11.66 percent, while imported coal contributed 13.54 percent. Furnace oil made up a minimal 0.16 percent of total electricity generation.
Similarly, local gas contributed 8.31 percent, while imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) accounted for 11.81 percent. Nuclear energy contributed 14.25 percent to the overall electricity production during the month.
NEPRA will take the final decision on the proposed revision after reviewing CPPA’s request during the upcoming hearing. The adjustment, if approved, will directly impact monthly electricity bills for consumers across the country.
