Iran’s military forces reportedly killed Ismail Shahbakhsh, a high-ranking commander of the Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice) militant group, along with several of his associates within Pakistani territory, as per Iran International English citing Iran’s state-run media.
This armed confrontation unfolded within Pakistan’s borders just a month subsequent to reciprocal airstrikes between the two nations. Notably, this incident marks the first of its kind following Pakistan’s recent general elections.
Jaish al-Adl has been responsible for numerous assaults on Iranian security forces over the years. In December, the group claimed responsibility for an attack on a police station in Sistan-Balochistan, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 police personnel, according to Al Arabiya News.
In the aftermath of the airstrikes, both countries agreed to enhance security cooperation. On January 16, Iran conducted airstrikes within Pakistan’s territory, prompting Pakistan to withdraw its ambassador. Two days later, Pakistan retaliated with airstrikes targeting “terrorist militant organizations.” Despite initial hopes of swiftly resolving misunderstandings, subsequent events indicated otherwise.
Tensions between Iran and Pakistan escalated following missile strikes aimed at “terror units.” Iran launched missile and drone strikes in Pakistan on the night of January 16, targeting two “significant headquarters” of Jaish al-Adl. Islamabad alleged that these strikes resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to three girls, as reported by Al Arabiya News citing Tasnim News Agency.
