Crude plummets as US-Iran talks raise hopes of reopening Hormuz

Reading Time: 2 mins read

NEW YORK/DUBAI: Global crude oil prices tumbled on Wednesday as emerging diplomatic signals over a potential U.S.-Iran agreement to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz relieved acute supply disruption concerns across global markets.

International benchmark Brent crude fell to $78.30 a barrel, slipping below the $78 mark during intra-day trading for the first time since July 13. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude mirrored the retreat, dropping to $74.50 a barrel — hitting one of its lowest levels in three weeks.

The sudden market shift follows comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who indicated during an interview with CNBC that an agreement between Washington and Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be finalized “today or tomorrow.”

Market Reaction and Key Price Levels

The optimism marks a sharp reversal from peak geopolitical anxiety last month, when Brent crude surged to a high of $100.69 a barrel on July 23 amid fears of military escalation.

GLOBAL BENCHMARK ENERGY SUMMARY
===================================================================
Brent Crude: $78.30 / bbl (Sub-$78 low, lowest since July 13)
WTI Crude: $74.50 / bbl (Three-week low)
July 23 Peak: $100.69 / bbl (Brent high watermark)

Diplomatic Progress & Analyst Outlook

Confidence in global markets gained further momentum following official commentary from Qatar, which has been serving as a key diplomatic channel.

– Qatari Mediation: Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described ongoing diplomatic discussions as having entered a “very positive phase,” reinforcing market expectations of a near-term breakthrough.
– Easing Supply Risk: Energy economists noted that a formal agreement to normalize maritime traffic through Hormuz — a transit route for roughly 20% of global petroleum — would dismantle the severe geopolitical risk premium built into prices over recent weeks.
– Persistent Caution: Shipping analysts and energy traders warned that volatility will remain high until official terms are disclosed. Maritime tracking services continue to monitor vessel flows closely through the choke point, as Iran has yet to issue an official public statement confirming the status of negotiations.

While Washington’s optimistic stance has driven a broad sell-off in crude futures, market participants emphasize that physical shipping flows must verifiably normalize before energy markets fully stabilize.
