The scenic valley of Kalash in Chitral has been under attack. These terror attacks and skirmishes were frequent in tribal districts but now a new front along the Afghan border has been targeted as the TTP continued to target our security forces.
The incident occurred when a large group of terrorists infiltrated into Pakistan from across the border from Nuristan and Kunar provinces of Afghanistan. They were carrying high-grade military equipment- probably the ones which the UN recently noted were left behind by US troops after departing from Afghanistan.
The terrorists belonging to the proscribed TTP attacked two Pakistan Army check posts. This attack was effectively repulsed by security forces. At least 12 terrorists were killed and several others were wounded. Four army soldiers were martyred. There are reports that nearby villages were captured, although the claims are being vehemently denied.
The ISPR statement said that movement of terrorists was reported along the Afghan border and timely shared with the Afghan government. It said the neighbouring country was expected to fulfill its obligations and deny the use of Afghan soil by terrorists for attacks against Pakistan. Those concerns, it seems, have not been addressed and the acts continue.
It is concerning that the TTP has targeted the Kalash region. The area is home to the Kalash community, which remains under threat due to their lifestyle. The presence of militants in the areas poses a greater threat to the minority tribe. It is even further distressing that the civilian areas could be targeted.
The UN Security Council was recently told that the TTP poses a serious threat to regional countries. It was also briefed that the TTP is armed with NATO-calibre weapons which can be proliferated to other countries. The UN Counter-Terrorism Office warned that the situation in Afghanistan was growing increasingly complex and the weapons could fall into the hands of terrorists. The global community should notice and strengthen counter-terrorism efforts and intelligence sharing among countries.
The relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan is getting increasingly complex. The TTP will continue terror acts until the Afghan government takes action. Pakistan needs to ensure that the Afghan government acts against the TTP and other terror groups to prevent cross-border terrorism.
