In a significant diplomatic move, U.S. President Joe Biden has emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the safe return of hostages.
According to a report by WION on Monday, this statement follows a recent conversation between Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which the Prime Minister provided updates on the progress of ongoing negotiations.
Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the call took place shortly after Israel announced the dispatch of a delegation of senior officials to Qatar to engage in talks. This delegation, which includes high-ranking members of Israel’s military and internal security agencies, has arrived in Doha to facilitate indirect negotiations with the Islamist militant group Hamas, which resumed over the weekend.
The Israeli campaign group, Hostages and Missing Families Forum, has described the current developments as a “historic opportunity” to secure the release of all hostages. Meanwhile, another group of relatives, the Tikva Forum, has appealed to President-elect Donald Trump to maintain support for Israel, advocating for military pressure as the most effective means to bring their loved ones home.
“We demand one thing: let us work. Let freedom triumph over tyranny, let good triumph over evil, let life triumph over death,” a representative of the Tikva Forum stated, underscoring their belief in Israel’s military capabilities.
As diplomatic efforts unfold, Israel has continued its military operations in Gaza. Recent reports indicate that an Israeli airstrike targeted a house in the Bureij refugee camp, resulting in the deaths of 28 individuals over the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll in Gaza to approximately 46,565, according to the health ministry and Hamas officials.
In addition to operations in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have also targeted several Hezbollah positions along the Syria-Lebanon border, including a rocket launcher and military sites used for smuggling weapons. The IDF stated that prior to these strikes, they communicated their intentions to an international mechanism established as part of the ongoing ceasefire negotiations with Hezbollah, but claimed that their warnings went unaddressed.
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes peace and the safety of all individuals involved.
