Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu, renowned throughout East Asia for her portrayal of the romantic lead in the 2001 television series “Meteor Garden,” has passed away at the age of 48 due to influenza, as reported by her sister on Monday.
Affectionately known as “Big S,” Hsu died while on a family vacation in Japan, according to her sister Dee Hsu. This news quickly became the most searched topic on China’s Weibo microblogging platform.
“My beloved and kindhearted sister Barbie Hsu succumbed to pneumonia caused by influenza and has sadly departed from us,” stated Dee, who is also known as Little S.
“I am thankful to have been her sister in this lifetime, and for the moments we shared and the care we provided for one another. I will forever cherish her memory and miss her dearly.”
The sisters initially gained recognition through their pop group S.O.S, but it was Hsu’s prominent role in the romantic Taiwanese drama “Meteor Garden” that solidified her fame.
