AUCKLAND: Australia’s women cricket team has set a new world record for the most consecutive One Day Internationals (ODI) wins with a six-wicket triumph over New Zealand in Mount Maunganui.
Australia now has a winning streak of 22, overtaking Ricky Ponting’s 2003 men’s side for the longest run of victories in any form of international cricket. Australia women’s team equaled the record last year in October.
Australia’s last loss in women’s ODI action was more than three years ago, at home to England in October 2017. The first of Australia’s 22 victories came on 12 March 2018 against India in Vadodara.
Half-centuries from Alyssa Healy (65) and Ellyse Perry (56), plus a big six from Ashleigh Gardiner (53) off the final ball to clinch the win helped Australia knock off the runs in 38.3 overs.
Megan Schutt was the pick of Australia’s bowlers as she claimed four for 32 in nine overs as Australia restricted New Zealand to 212 all out, despite opener Lauren Down’s 90.
The victory means Australia is in pole position to win the three-match Rose Bowl series. The series concludes with two further matches at the Bay Oval on Thursday and Saturday.
