Ministers assure 'indiscriminate' action against culprits

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry has called for awarding exemplary punishment to those involved in Ganesh Mandir incident in Rahim Yar Khan.

Speaking to journalists today (Friday), the minister strongly condemning the temple incident and said that Pakistan was not India and no fascist ideology could rule here. “No one was allowed to hurt sentiments of the Hindu community”, he remarked.

He said it was duty of all Pakistanis to respect and sanctify the two colours in the national flag “in which white colour represented minorities”. “The prime minister and the chief justice of Pakistan have taken personal notices of the matter,” he added.

“Prime Minister Imran Khan, the political and military leadership and the courts wanted to ensure protection of the minorities’ rights as envisaged in the Constitution,” he said, adding, “We must stand up against those who target our Pakistani brothers on the basis of race, colour or creed.”

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid said that the federal government was coordinating with the provincial government to nab the culprits of the incident.

He also assured indiscriminate action against those spreading religious hatred and inciting others against minorities. Terming the incident unfortunate and condemnable, Rashid said, “We will ensure the protection of all religious minorities”.

The interior minister also observed that such incidents tarnish the country’s image. “It is completely against Islamic teachings to desecrate the place of worship of any religion,” the minister remarked.

‘NA passes resolution’

The National Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution against the incident and the House assured minorities of protection. PTI lawmaker Shireen Mazari informed the session that a First Information Report (FIR) of the incident has been registered.

Mazari assured other lawmakers that action against those responsible has been initiated and added that there was no need to “resort to politics on the matter”.
