PM to chair NCC meeting on coronavirus situation today

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has summoned a meeting of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) on COVID-19 today to discuss the worsening situation in the country.

The prime minister summoned the NCC on COVID-19 after holding a meeting with Minister for Planning Asad Umar and Special Assistant on Health Dr Faisal Sultan. During the meeting, the prime minister was briefed in detail about the situation of coronavirus in the country. The meeting is expected to make strict decisions as the coronavirus situation is worsening across the country.

The National Command and Control Centre (NCOC) is also scheduled to meet today before the NCC meeting under the prime minister. The meeting will consider imposing further curbs across the country in case of the failure of the authorities to implement SOPs.

Speaking to a media outlet after meeting the prime minister, SAPM Dr Sultan said they would raise the issue with the provinces regarding the non-implementation of SOPs required to prevent the spread of the disease.

He said provinces will be asked to ensure strict implementation of the SOPs to avoid imposition of more restrictions. He expressed grave concern over the current situation and regretted that the people were taking the pandemic lightly.

He said the media was wrongly reporting about the extended lockdown during Ramazan, and such decision would only be made with consensus of the provinces.

He refuted allegations that the government had failed to tackle the situation. He said the situation in Pakistan was still better than many counties of the world, citing the the example of neighbouring India where the situation has worsened.

The NCC in its meeting will also discuss if more countries should be included in the list of Category C for travel restrictions.
