World Sleep Day 2021: Know 10 Interesting Facts About Sleeping

World Sleep Day is being celebrated today which aims to highlight better prevention and management of sleep disorders.

As we know sleep plays an essential part in maintaining one’s overall health. It was first observed in 2008. At the time of its beginning, the aim of the day was to bring healthcare providers together in order to share information related to sleep with the world.

Sleep deprivation can result in cases of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other chronic diseases, along with stress and anxiety.

According to many studies, women need about 30 minutes of more sleep than men because of the hormonal changes due to their monthly menstrual cycle and menopause. There are 10 interesting facts about sleeping everyone must know: 

1) Humans spend a third of their life sleeping. That’s about 25 years.

2) Parents of new babies miss out on 6 months’ worth of sleep in the first 2 years of their child’s life.

3) The record for the longest period without sleep is 11 days.

4) Sleeping less than 7 hours each night reduces your life expectancy.

5) Some Deaf People Make Sign Language in Their Sleep.

6) Lack of sleep can cause a weight gain of 2 pounds (0.9 kg) in under a week.

7) It’s impossible to sneeze while sleeping.

8) You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching television.

9) Women experience significantly more nightmares than men and have more emotional dreams, a research found.

10) The average person falls asleep in seven minutes.
