New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was arrested on Thursday by the Uttar Pradesh police for violating Section 144 imposed to limit the spread of COVID-19.
According to Indian media reports, the leader and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were on their way to Hathras, where they wanted to meet the family of the gang-rape victim who died on Tuesday.
Although they were stopped by the police on Yamuna Expressway as per media, the duo then set off on foot after which they were arrested.
“I want to walk to Hathras alone. Please tell me under which section are you arresting me,” Rahul can be seen asking in a video.
The police cited the imposition of Section 144. The section prohibits the assembly of four or more people. Rahul alleged that he was pushed to the ground and struck with a lathi by the police.
Potages showed the Congress MP being pushed and shoved as he tried to resist the police. In the clash, the 50-year-old was seen falling to the ground. Other Congress leaders helped him up.
Other political parties and people condemned the incident and came out in support of the Gandhis.
