PESHAWAR: An important development has emerged on the political front in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with a meeting between KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Federal Minister Engineer Amir Muqam focusing on the province’s deteriorating security and political situation.
According to sources, the two leaders expressed serious concern over the worsening law and order situation in the province. The meeting also included discussions on the political future of the provincial government and possible options in light of the prevailing circumstances.
Sources said both sides were of the view that, given the deteriorating security situation, the continued tenure of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was not in the best interest of the province and could further aggravate the situation.
According to the sources, Federal Minister Amir Muqam maintained that the imposition of governor’s rule was a constitutional option available under the Constitution of Pakistan and could be considered in light of the prevailing circumstances and ground realities.
He also emphasised that an in-house change through the provincial assembly could provide a political and democratic way forward and would constitute a positive development.
Muqam further proposed convening a conference of like-minded political parties to collectively address the challenges facing the province and formulate a joint strategy aimed at improving the situation.
During the meeting, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said the federal government had the constitutional authority to impose governor’s rule in the province in accordance with the prescribed legal and constitutional requirements.
The governor also levelled a serious allegation against Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, claiming that instead of standing alongside the state in the ongoing fight against terrorism, the chief minister was allegedly seen siding with elements involved in terrorism.
The claims and political proposals discussed during the meeting come amid continuing concerns over security and political stability in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
