ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to introduce a uniform gas tariff across the country from July 1, 2027, at the start of the next fiscal year, with formal approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expected to be sought for the major economic reform.
According to sources, implementing the proposed reform would require the government to phase out the existing cross-subsidy mechanism. In its place, an estimated Rs162 billion fund would be allocated to provide direct relief to low-income and financially vulnerable households.
Under the proposed plan, the existing gas billing structure based on 12 different consumer slabs would be abolished. Currently, consumers pay different gas rates depending on their level of consumption.
Once the new policy is implemented, consumers across different categories would gradually be brought under a single average tariff. The estimated uniform rate is expected to be around Rs1,708 per MMBTU.
The proposed reform is aimed at replacing the existing differentiated tariff structure with a more uniform pricing mechanism while shifting targeted support towards low-income consumers.
