ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced advanced technology to make citizen registration and access to identity document services easier. The new technology includes facilities for fingerprint collection, photography, biometric verification and iris scanning.
According to NADRA officials, the new equipment has been developed with the support of NADRA Technologies Limited, the authority’s wholly owned subsidiary. The equipment includes a tablet-like device, a rugged enrollment kit and self-service kiosks.
The tablet-like device can be used to register citizens’ data as well as capture fingerprints, photographs and iris scans.
NADRA has also developed a larger device known as a rugged enrollment kit, which can collect data from a large number of citizens at a time. The kit is particularly useful in remote areas where electricity or internet connectivity is limited or unavailable.
In addition, self-service kiosks have been introduced that will operate similarly to ATMs. Through these kiosks, citizens will be able to enter their information themselves and complete the process for re-issuance of their identity cards.
Alternative Biometric Verification for Faded Fingerprints
NADRA officials said an alternative biometric verification facility has also been introduced for citizens whose fingerprints have faded or cannot be properly detected by biometric devices for other reasons.
According to officials, some people face difficulties at various institutions when their fingerprints cannot be verified, particularly during biometric verification at banks.
The new facility will allow such citizens to verify their identity through an alternative method, helping address problems caused by difficulties in fingerprint recognition.
NADRA said the use of advanced technology is aimed at improving citizens’ access to identity-related services and making the process of obtaining and verifying identity documents more convenient.
