KARACHI: Transporters’ negotiations with the government proved successful on Saturday, leading both factions of the Mini Mazda Association to announce an end to their strike.
The decision brings relief after five days of paralyzed goods movement across the country.
With the strike lifted, the “wheel jam” that had stalled supply chains has now started moving again.
Fifteen goods transport organizations were part of the Transport Council Alliance that had joined the protest.
Mini Mazda Association President Haji Sher Ali said the decision was taken “in the interest of the community, the country, and the public,” expressing hope that the government would honor its promises.
He cautioned, however, that if the agreement was not implemented, transporters would resume protests by parking trucks on roads.
Sher Ali confirmed that all demands had been accepted, including the formation of a committee to review the controversial daily changes in diesel prices — a mechanism that had triggered widespread resistance across the petroleum sector.
It may be recalled here that earlier talks between the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance and federal and provincial representatives had ended inconclusively.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs and Sindh’s provincial minister Saeed Ghani represented the government in those negotiations.
The strike’s end comes after weeks of turmoil in the petroleum sector, where goods transporters, pump owners, and dealers have all voiced opposition to the daily pricing formula.
While the government has made concessions — including raising dealers’ margins — citizens remain burdened by fuel costs far above pre‑war levels, with relief still elusive despite official assurances.
