Glacial melt and Monsoon onset trigger severe flood threat along Indus river

MIANWALI/KUNDIAN: A dangerous confluence of early summer glacial melt and newly active monsoon currents has placed large swathes of Pakistan on high alert. Authorities are scrambling to manage rapidly surging water levels along the Indus River basin.

In Mianwali, hydrologists have recorded a sharp spike in water inflow to the Indus River near Kundian, fueled primarily by the rapid melting of northern glaciers amid above-normal daytime temperatures in the high-altitude glaciated valleys. This warming has accelerated snow pack thawing, triggering a massive volume of water that is now traveling downstream.

The immediate impact is being felt acutely at the Chashma Barrage, where the water inflow increased by an alarming twenty-two thousand cusecs within a mere twenty-four-hour window. This sudden surge has pushed the total inflow at the barrage to two hundred and forty thousand cusecs. Although engineers are working around the clock to mitigate upstream pressure, the outflow has only reached two hundred and thirty-two thousand cusecs, creating a precarious water accumulation.

Currently, the water level at the Chashma Barrage has reached six hundred and forty-six feet. This rise has completely submerged all adjacent lakes of the Indus River, filling them to maximum capacity. In response to this compounding pressure, irrigation authorities have opened all fifty-two spillways of the Chashma Barrage to prevent structural failure and coordinate controlled discharge.

Double Threat: Monsoon Deluge and Glacial Outbursts

This hydraulic strain arrives as the Pakistan Meteorological Department as well as the National Disaster Management Authority issue nationwide warnings regarding the seasonal monsoon. Heavy rain, windstorms, and intense cloudbursts are actively lashing parts of the country, dropping immense volumes of water into already saturated catchments.

The primary concern for disaster management officials is a dual-disaster scenario:

Anticipated Downstream Flooding: A massive volumes of water descend from the northern mountains and meet localized monsoon rains, the risk of severe riverine and flash flooding along the Indus plains grows exponentially. The rapid rise in water level threatens nearby settlements, agricultural lands, and critical infrastructure.
The GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood) Threat: The combination of excess surface rainwater and high-altitude thawing has destabilized fragile moraine dams in northern valleys. This has triggered urgent warnings for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and dangerous debris flows in regions like Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Local administrations and emergency response teams have been placed on high alert.

Residents living along vulnerable riverbanks and low-lying areas adjacent to the Indus River are strongly advised to monitor official directives, avoid unnecessary travel near swollen channels, and prepare for potential evacuation as the peak monsoon season progresses.
