ISLAMABAD: In a major breakthrough for Pakistani travelers, Pakistan and Croatia have officially agreed to expedite the establishment of a Croatian visa processing facility in Islamabad. The announcement marks a significant relief for Pakistani citizens, who previously had to travel to third countries like Iran to process Croatian visa applications.

The landmark development was announced following high-level delegation talks between Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, and the visiting Croatian Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Dr. Gordan Grlić-Radman.

The new facility is expected to streamline the application process, slash travel friction, and significantly catalyze people-to-people and economic exchanges between the two nations.

Direct Diplomatic Engagement

According to a joint communique issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two dignitaries held extensive discussions reviewing the complete spectrum of bilateral ties alongside pressing regional and global issues. Reaffirming their shared dedication to broadening sovereign cooperation, both sides described this historic visit—the first-ever by a Croatian Foreign Minister to Pakistan—as a critical turning point to inject fresh momentum into their diplomatic partnership.

To sustain this trajectory, the foreign ministers committed to maintaining persistent high-level contacts and fully operationalizing their Bilateral Political Consultation mechanism.

Pakistan extended an invitation to host the next comprehensive round of political consultations between late 2026 and early 2027.

Expanding Sectoral Partnerships

Recognizing the strategic advantages of their respective geo-locations, both nations prioritized robust economic integration and trade diversification.

The joint ministerial roadmap outlines immediate actionable partnerships across multiple key sectors:

  • Infrastructure & Ports: Pakistan highlighted the expansive capacity and connectivity of Karachi Port, prompting both nations to initiate collaborative logistics arrangements between their primary maritime gateways.
Information Technology & Digital Services: Collaborative framework development to foster business-to-business (B2B) linkages and broaden technology transfers.
Diplomatic Academic Alliance: An agreement to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) enabling institutional cooperation between the diplomatic academies of both nations.
  • Shared Challenges: Pledges to jointly confront climate change, cultivate cross-border tourism, and enhance research integration across science, culture, and higher education.

Labor Mobility and EU Market Integration

A central component of the bilateral framework focuses on migration and structured labor mobility.

The ministers appreciated growing institutional connectivity, explicitly recognizing the value of establishing legal, verified corridors for skilled Pakistani workers seeking employment in Croatia. Both leaders simultaneously emphasized their joint resolve to actively combat human smuggling and illicit migration frameworks.

On the broader multilateral stage, Pakistan expressed a strong intent to deepen engagement under the European Union’s economic framework.

Ahead of the EU’s new Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) regulation set to take effect on January 1, 2027, Pakistan shared its ongoing preparatory roadmap for its re-application.

The Croatian delegation formally noted Pakistan’s strategic trade interests, emphasizing the historical role the GSP framework has played in integrating Pakistan into the global marketplace.
