British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday announced his resignation as prime minister and leader of the Labour Party, pledging his full support to his successor and promising an orderly transfer of power.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street following the announcement, Starmer said that he had spoken to King Charles earlier in the day and would work to ensure a smooth handover of government responsibilities.
“I will do everything I can to see an orderly transfer of power and give my successor my full support,” Starmer said.
Talking about his time in office, the outgoing prime minister said every decision he had made was guided by a commitment to putting Britain first.
“Every decision I have made in office has been about putting the country I love first,” he told supporters and members of the media gathered outside Downing Street.
Starmer expressed gratitude to his family, particularly his wife, Victoria “Vic” Starmer, whom he described as “a rock” throughout his political career.
After leaving what he called “the biggest job in the country,” Starmer said he intended to devote more time to his family.
“Being the best husband I can be to my fantastic wife Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad,” he said, becoming visibly emotional.
