PARIS: French authorities have imposed nighttime curfews and restrictions on public gatherings in several cities following violent protests, vandalism, arson and looting. The government says the measures are intended to restore public order and prevent further damage to residents, businesses and public property.

According to the details provided, movement restrictions have been introduced in Paris, Nice and Lyon from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., while unauthorized gatherings have been banned in central areas of the capital. Restrictions have also been imposed in other areas, including Marseille, Bordeaux and Lille, depending on local conditions.

Political Pressure and Government Response
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reportedly acknowledged that police had faced difficulties in containing the unrest in some areas. Meanwhile, opposition parties have questioned the government’s preparedness and its strategy for maintaining law and order.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that local authorities would be empowered to impose additional restrictions according to the evolving situation. The government has also indicated that financial assistance may be provided to help restore damaged businesses and buildings. Legal measures are being considered to recover the costs of the damage from those found responsible.

Arrests and Casualties During Protests
The report claims that more than 2,500 people were detained during the protests, while approximately 1,000 police officers were injured in clashes. According to a report attributed to Agence France-Presse (AFP), one civilian also lost a hand in an explosion. These figures and casualty claims require independent verification.

The protests reportedly began with students demanding improvements in educational facilities. However, the demonstrations subsequently expanded as labor organizations and other groups joined the movement. Rising living costs and economic hardship have also been cited as factors contributing to public anger.

Businesses and Historic Buildings Damaged
According to local sources and media reports, masked groups set fire to vehicles, buildings and shops in several cities and looted commercial premises. Figures attributed to business groups indicate that more than 2,000 businesses and shops were affected, with total financial losses estimated at hundreds of millions of euros.

The report also refers to severe fire damage to a historic building in the central French city of Limoges. Authorities are reportedly reviewing CCTV footage to identify those allegedly involved in the unrest and bring them to justice.

Note: The reported figures, the attribution to AFP, the identities and official statements cited above, and the circumstances surrounding the alleged unrest have not been independently verified for this report.
