China has expressed its commitment to further strengthening relations with Islamic countries and working jointly to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing nations.

According to Chinese state media, the Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Monday.

During the meeting, Wang Yi said the OIC is the largest intergovernmental organisation representing the Islamic world, adding that China has consistently attached strategic importance to its relations with Islamic countries and the OIC.

The Chinese foreign minister said China highly values the strong support extended by Islamic countries and the OIC on issues related to Xinjiang and the Taiwan question.

He added that China opposes a return to the “law of the jungle” in global affairs and is ready to work with Islamic countries to protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing nations.

Wang Yi said China and OIC member states should enhance cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, and work together towards political solutions to regional conflicts while promoting peace and stability in the Middle East.

He also stressed the need for China and the OIC to uphold the role of the United Nations and respect the fundamental principles governing international relations, while contributing to a fairer system of global governance.

OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha said the organisation supports the “One China” principle and opposes external interference in China’s internal affairs.

He welcomed development initiatives in Xinjiang and said the OIC is keen to expand partnership with China to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

Taha also praised China’s efforts towards a comprehensive, lasting and just solution to the Palestinian issue, expressing hope that Beijing would continue to play an active role in this regard.
