Instagram’s new Map feature sparks privacy concerns among users

Instagram has rolled out a new “Map” feature that reveals users’ last known location to their friends — a move that has stirred controversy and sparked widespread privacy concerns among users and digital safety experts.

The feature, introduced as a way to help users “stay connected,” displays the last place where a user was active on the app. This information is shared with either mutual followers or a user’s “Close Friends” list.

According to Instagram, the location-sharing function is opt-in by design, turned off by default, and comes with built-in protections for teenagers, including parental alerts and privacy reminders.

Despite Meta’s reassurances, confusion and concern continue to grow. Several users have reported that their locations appeared on the Map without knowingly enabling the feature, raising suspicions about potential glitches or backdoor tracking mechanisms. These claims have heightened fears of a possible breach of consent or malfunctioning privacy settings.

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, addressed the controversy, emphasizing that location sharing only happens when users explicitly choose to enable the feature. He clarified that the Map does not offer real-time tracking but instead records the last location where Instagram was opened, somewhat similar to a timestamped footprint.

Privacy advocates and tech watchdogs argue that even passive or delayed location sharing can pose significant risks — especially for women, children, or individuals in vulnerable situations.

They warn that revealing one’s whereabouts, even occasionally, can be exploited for stalking, harassment, or other harmful activities.

Digital safety groups stress that features offering geographic transparency must come with crystal-clear user consent, simple control options, and robust defaults — especially on platforms with billions of users.

For users wary of sharing their location, Instagram offers an option to disable the Map feature entirely in the app’s privacy settings. It is recommended that users review their sharing permissions and limit access only to trusted individuals.

This new feature arrives amid growing global scrutiny over how social media platforms balance user connectivity with personal security. With digital footprints becoming more visible, the Instagram Map tool has become yet another flashpoint in the ongoing debate over privacy rights in the age of surveillance capitalism.
