Has first cousin marriage been banned in Pakistan?

While there is an ongoing debate about the health risks associated with first cousin marriages, specially with regards to increased rates of genetic disorders, there are no legal restrictions on such marriages in Pakistan.

Cousin marriages are relatively common practice in Pakistan, predominantly for cultural and economic reasons. The practice is deeply rooted in tradition and kinship structures, and is often seen as a way to maintain family ties, wealth, and cultural continuity.

However, there is increasing awareness of the potential health implications, and some initiatives are promoting genetic counseling and education to help couples make informed decisions

It should be note that many European and Asian countries have laws against first-cousin marriage, including China, North Korea, South Korea, and some parts of India. Moreover, some U.S. states also prohibit this practice.

Health risk related to cousin marriages

Experts say children born to cousin marriages face a higher likelihood of inheriting recessive genetic disorders, as cousins share a greater proportion of their genes compared to unrelated individuals.

Conditions commonly linked to consanguineous unions include thalassemia, cystic fibrosis, and various hearing and visual impairments. Research indicates that marriages between first cousins can double the risk of congenital abnormalities in offspring.

Over time, such relationships may also reduce genetic diversity within families or communities, which can potentially weaken immunity and increase vulnerability to certain diseases.
