Islamabad High Court declares ‘Advocate’ on number plates illegal

The Islamabad High Court has declared it illegal to have “Advocate” written on vehicle number plates. Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri made this announcement while distributing certificates at a lawyers’ ceremony.

He emphasized that no one is above the law and that lawyers, like other citizens, must comply with legal regulations. Writing “Advocate” on number plates creates a false impression of special privilege, which is not legally justified.

Justice Tariq Jahangiri reminded lawyers that laws are equal for everyone. He instructed them to remove such markings from their vehicles and to refrain from using their profession for personal benefits.

The court has made it clear that strict action can be taken against those violating this law. Lawyers have been advised to use officially issued standard number plates and follow traffic rules like other drivers.

In Pakistan, special number plates, such as those displaying titles like “Advocate,” “Doctor,” or other designations, are not legally permitted as per the country’s traffic and motor vehicle laws.

The official vehicle registration system mandates the use of standardized number plates issued by the relevant authorities, such as the Excise and Taxation Department.

These standardized plates ensure uniformity, prevent misuse of professional titles for undue privileges, and help law enforcement in vehicle identification.

Writing “Advocate” or any other designation on a number plate creates an impression of special status, which is not recognized under the law and may lead to preferential treatment, thus violating the principle of equality before the law.
