‘Bird Box 2’ aka ‘Bird Box Barcelona’ is returning to Netflix soon this month.
Bird Box remains one of the most-watched Netflix movies ever. The long-awaited sequel is actually not a spin-off movie. Let’s find out more:
Bird Box
Bird Box was based on Josh Malerman’s novel based on the same name. The synopsis of part one revolves around the character Malorie Hayes, played by Sandra Bullock, as she tries to protect herself and two children from entities that cause people who look at them to kill themselves.

The film received mixed reviews from critics but went on to become the most-watched film on Netflix within 28 days of release, according to Netflix.
Bird Box Barcelona
Bird Box Barcelona is not a direct sequel to the first movie and is instead a spin-off movie. The new movie is set in Barcelona (unsurprisingly) and takes place in the same timeline as the first movie.
Instead of the US, the viewers will see how the outbreak affected Spain and follow a father and daughter as they attempt to survive in the new landscape.
Who could come back in Bird Box 2?
A direct sequel would have to bring back Sandra Bullock as Malorie, alongside Pruitt Taylor Vince as the sanctuary’s leader Rick and — after her surprise return — Parminder Nagra as Dr Lapham.
Vivien Lyra Blair and Julian Edwards played Girl and Boy, now known as Olympia and Tom, but if there’s any form of a time jump in the sequel, those roles could be recast.
Release date
A spin-off sequel, Bird Box Barcelona, is set to be released on Netflix on July 14, 2023.
