SC tops implementation of Supreme Court (Paractice and Procedure) Bill 2023

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Friday underlined the need to develop such a mechanism that could curb dollar’s smuggling out of the country.

Chief Justice Omar Ata Bandial, while hearing a plea filed by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) plea against a Lahore High Court (LHC) order which had stayed the recovery super tax from high-earning taxpayers, passed remarks that that economic situation of the country would improve if government takes steps to curb smuggling of foreign currency.

CJP Bandial said “$40 million are smuggled out of Pakistan on daily basis, we need to take organised measures against the menace”.

He said everyone should improve itself in larger interest of the country. He also said Pakistan was not on the path of bankruptcy.

During the course of hearing today, FBR’s lawyer Faisal Siddique said that today he was representing the FBR but if Pakistan defaulted, he would be representing the federation.

The chief justice of Pakistan did not agree with his views, saying that the country would not default. He remarked that everyone should improve one’s behaviour for the good of the country. He observed that government should take measures to stop daily smuggling of 40 million dollars to other countries.

After that, the court adjourned the case till Feb 16.
