KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday restrained the provincial police from registering new cases against PTI Senator Azam Swati who was shifted to Qambar, near Larkana, on December 9, moments after Balochistan High Court had quashed all cases registered against him there.

The SHC took up a petition, filed by Azam Swati’s son Usman Swati, challenging to keep his father under detention of Sindh Police. While hearing Perveen Rahman case moments earlier, the bench had directed IG Sindh and Home Secretary to submit details about number of cases registered against 74 year old PTI Senator across the province, under which circumstances these cases were registered, and most importantly, why these cases were registered here in Sindh on the basis of an incident which was already booked in Islamabad.

At the start of hearing, Prosecutor General sought time from the bench, saying the petition was filed today, on which the SHC bench rejected the request and ordered to complete their preparations about the case by tomorrow.

At the outset of the hearing, the SHC also ordered to summon SSPs across Sindh where cases against Azam Swati had been registered, and submit English translation of all of those FIRs.

On this occasion, IG Sindh tried to buy sometime which was rejected by the court, which ensured into heated exchange of arguments between the two, i.e. the SHC bench and the Inspector General of Sindh Police.
The SHC finally declared that if Azam Swati was under arrest, his custody should be kept there in Islamabad, and instructed IG Sindh and others to submit record of all cases against him with copies of English translation. The IG Sindh and the Prosecutor General were also asked by the bench to examine the content of FIR registered against Swati in Islamabad, to see if there was any difference between the one registered there and those registered in Sindh province. The hearing was later adjourned until December 15.
