ISLAMABAD: The second phase of the local government elections in 16 districts of Sindh and by-election in NA-245 constituency of Karachi have been delayed till August end.
Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) spokesperson said the by-election will now be held on August 21 while the local bodies’ elections will be held on August 28.
The local government elections in 16 districts of Karachi and Hyderabad were scheduled on July 24, while the by-poll on NA-245 Karachi was scheduled on July 27.
The decision has been taken in light of the heavy rain predictions in Sindh in the coming days.
The spokesperson said they reached the decision on the reports provided by the provincial election commissioner, chief secretary, and Pakistan Metrological Department.
Earlier today, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had made apprehensions that heavy rainfall on July 24 – the scheduled day for the election – could impact the voting.
Notably, MQM-P had approached the Supreme Court (SC) for delaying the local bodies’ elections as it challenged the voters’s lists and delimitations.
The polling for the first phase in 14 districts of Sindh was held in the last week of June, in which the PPP won with a leading majority.
