60,000 sign petition as Iranian footballers face ‘execution’ fears at home

SYDNEY: The Australian government is facing mounting pressure to grant asylum to the Iranian women’s national football team, as a petition surpassing 60,000 signatures was presented on Monday expressing “grave fears” for the athletes’ safety upon their return to a country now at war.

The squad, currently in Australia for the Women’s Asian Cup, has been thrust into a geopolitical firestorm following acts of silent defiance on the pitch that have seen them branded as “wartime traitors” by state-aligned voices in Tehran.

The controversy erupted last Monday in Robina, where the Iranian players stood motionless and refused to sing the national anthem before their tournament opener against South Korea. The gesture, widely interpreted as a protest against the Islamic Republic’s regime, occurred just forty-eight hours after the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran.

However, the atmosphere shifted visibly during Thursday’s match against Australia on the Gold Coast. In a stark reversal, the players sang the anthem and performed salutes before their 4-0 defeat, prompting immediate speculation that the team had been reached by authorities and instructed to fall in line.

The backlash from Tehran has been swift and vitriolic. In a video shared on social media, Iranian state TV presenter Mohammad Reza Shahbazi launched a scathing attack on the team, accusing them of “dishonor and betrayal” and declaring they “must be dealt with.”

According to translations of the broadcast, Shahbazi argued that anyone who takes a step against the country under war conditions must be dealt with “more severely,” a label that carries heavy legal and security implications in the current Iranian climate.

Adding weight to the calls for protection, the exiled Iranian crown prince, Reza Pahlavi, warned on Sunday that the players are under “significant pressure” and face an “ongoing threat” from the state. He noted that as a result of their brave act of civil disobedience in refusing to sing the anthem, the athletes face “dire consequences” should they return to Iran.

The petition now calls on the  government to provide an immediate safe haven for the players and staff, arguing that the public branding of the team as traitors makes their repatriation a matter of life and death.
