RAWALPINDI: The 50th martyrdom anniversary of 1971 war hero Major Shabbir Sharif, the elder brother of former army chief Gen (retd) Raheel Sharif, is being observed today.
Born in the village of Kanjah in Gujarat, Major Shabbir Sharif opened his eyes in the Punjab province on 28th April 1943 and was commissioned in the Frontier Force Regiment on 19 April 1964.
Major Shabbir Sharif was martyred in the Pak-India war on 6th December 1971 while defending his homeland in the Sulemanki sector of the western front. His best services are being remembered today as the whole nation is paying tribute to their brave grandson.
During the war against the enemy, Major Shabbir Sharif and his team destroyed four Indian tanks and sent 43 soldiers to hell. He was recognized as a hero of the 1971 war and was awarded the Haider Medal.

A Pakistan Army spokesman said that Major Shabbir Sharif was a very brave officer. He set great examples of bravery in the 1965 and 1971 Pak-India wars. His sacrifice proves that there is nothing more important than the protection of the motherland.
Major Shabbir Sharif was awarded Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military gallantry award, for his valor and bravery during the 1971 war. He also received a Sitara-e-Jurat in 1965 Sword of Honor from Kakul Academy.
