The year 2025 proved to be a roller coaster for Bollywood, marked by political headwinds, stunning personal breakdowns, and security scares.

From a renewed ban on cross-border talent to a highly public wedding cancellation, here is a look back at the biggest controversies that shook the Indian film industry.

Renewed Ban on Pakistani Artists
Following heightened political tensions and a terror attack in Pahalgam earlier this year, the longstanding, informal ban on Pakistani artists working in Indian entertainment was reinstated with stricter enforcement.

This move caused significant disruption for several films, most notably affecting the release of an Indian film starring Fawad Khan and creating uncertainty for Diljit Dosanjh’s Sardaar 3, which features a Pakistani actress.

The renewed ban reignited the debate about the relationship between art and politics, with critics arguing that the move severed vital cultural ties, while supporters emphasized the principle of ‘Nation First.’

Smriti Mandhana and Palaash Muchhal Wedding Called Off
What began as a highly anticipated celebrity wedding ended in public heartbreak. The marriage between star cricketer Smriti Mandhana and music composer Palaash Muchhal, originally scheduled for November 23, was abruptly postponed due to a family health crisis.

Following the postponement, intense social media speculation and unverified cheating accusations began circulating online.

Both Mandhana and Muchhal issued separate public statements, confirming the wedding was officially called off. Muchhal announced his decision to “move on” and threatened legal action against those spreading defamatory rumors, while Mandhana requested privacy and reaffirmed her focus on her cricket career.

Saif Ali Khan Stabbing Incident
The year began with a shocking security breach when actor Saif Ali Khan was involved in a violent attack during an attempted robbery at his Mumbai residence in January 2025.

An intruder reportedly broke into the house, leading to a physical confrontation with the actor, who was said to have been stabbed multiple times. The incident shook the film fraternity and raised serious concerns about the safety and security of celebrities.

Political Firestorms and Bans
Emergency, a movie, the political drama faced intense backlash, including bans in Bangladesh and Punjab and protests across India, with accusations that the film was politically biased and manipulated historical facts.

Director Anurag Kashyap faced massive online uproar and multiple police complaints after making an abusive and derogatory remark on social media during a heated exchange about the Brahmin community.
