MADRID: At least 30 people were killed in a devastating train accident in Spain after two high-speed trains collided, prompting emergency rescue operations. The accident occurred on the railway line connecting Madrid with the southern region of Andalusia.

According to Spanish rail infrastructure manager Adif and regional emergency authorities, the accident involved an Iryo high-speed train and a Renfe-operated train. The collision caused several carriages to derail, leaving extensive damage at the scene.

Collision and Derailment
Initial reports indicated that the Iryo train derailed before colliding with an oncoming Renfe train. The impact caused carriages to leave the tracks and sent wreckage down an embankment.

Authorities launched an investigation to establish the exact cause of the accident and assess the full extent of the casualties.

Rail Services Suspended, Rescue Operations Launched
Following the crash, high-speed rail services connecting Madrid and Andalusia were suspended. Renfe activated its emergency assistance plan to support affected passengers and their families.

Emergency services asked local authorities to prepare facilities, including a sports hall, to accommodate passengers and injured people.

Images from the scene showed derailed carriages, twisted metal and debris scattered around the railway line.

Political Activities Disrupted
Following the accident, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez cancelled his official engagements for the day. Spain’s opposition People’s Party also suspended its campaign activities.

Authorities continued gathering information about the circumstances of the crash and the extent of the casualties.
