MULTAN: Four police officials, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and a station house officer (SHO), have been suspended after a woman allegedly died by suicide when her complaint of rape was not registered, authorities said.
According to police, the incident occurred in the Qadir Puran area of Multan, where Shamim Bibi allegedly consumed poisonous pills after failing to secure the registration of a first information report (FIR) regarding her rape complaint.
Officials said the woman had accused three local men of sexually assaulting her and had approached Budhla Sant police station to register a case. However, despite the passage of five days, the FIR was allegedly not lodged.
Police said the delay left the complainant under severe mental distress, and she allegedly took her own life after losing hope of obtaining justice.
Following the incident, Multan Regional Police Officer (RPO) took immediate notice and ordered disciplinary action against the officials allegedly responsible for the delay.
The suspended officers include DSP Irshad Hussain, SHO Azim Zulfiqar, investigating officer Waseem, and the police station’s duty clerk (moharrar). Police said a criminal case has also been registered against the four officials, while further investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
After a post-mortem examination, Shamim Bibi’s body was handed over to her family for burial. The investigation into both the alleged sexual assault complaint and the police officials’ conduct remains in progress.
