Questions have arisen about whether Saim Ayub will be part of the Pakistan squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, as uncertainty surrounds his recovery from a recent injury. The young opener sustained a right ankle fracture while chasing a ball at the third-man boundary during the second Test of the series in Cape Town, forcing him to be sidelined from action.
Following the injury, Ayub traveled to London for treatment under the supervision of assistant coach Azhar Mahmood, a trip arranged by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman. The PCB facilitated the visit to renowned orthopedic specialists in England in order to get an expert opinion on his condition.
Dr. Lucky Jayaseelan, one of the leading specialists who reviewed Ayub’s medical reports, has provided some optimism. He concluded that the injury had not caused significant damage. Saim Ayub himself later confirmed that doctors had reassured him about the injury, describing it as a “normal condition” and giving him the green light to bear weight on the affected leg.
However, despite this positive prognosis, the doctor has recommended six months of rest to allow for full recovery. Ayub’s X-rays and medical reports are to be further evaluated by a panel of specialists to determine the best course of action for his rehabilitation. This leaves Ayub’s participation in the Champions Trophy highly unlikely.
With Ayub’s absence seemingly confirmed, this opens the door for other options in the squad. Aggressive opener Fakhar Zaman could make a return to the national side, providing a potential boost to the batting lineup. Additionally, Imam-ul-Haq may also be in contention for a place in the squad.
The final squad for the Champions Trophy will be announced on January 12, but as of now, the PCB has not made a definitive decision regarding Ayub’s inclusion. The matter will likely be decided by the PCB Chairman, who will take the medical reports into account before making a final call.
As the clock ticks down to the announcement, fans are left wondering who will make the cut for the prestigious tournament.
