Narendra Modi’s photographs taken during his visit to the tranquil beaches of the Lakshadweep archipelago have unintentionally caused tension in the Maldives, revealing strains in the close relationship between the two countries under Malé’s new president, who leans towards China.
The images from Modi’s recent trip to the small Indian Ocean outpost showcased a rare side of the Indian Prime Minister, depicting him walking on sunlit white beaches and snorkeling in the turquoise-blue waters of the island. Ostensibly aimed at promoting domestic tourism, Modi expressed admiration for the islands’ stunning beauty, urging adventurous travelers to include Lakshadweep in their destination list without mentioning any other country in his posts.

However, as social media users began comparing Lakshadweep to the Maldives and suggesting it as India’s equivalent, a virtual spat ensued. This escalated into a diplomatic crisis between the two neighbors, exacerbated by the Maldivian president’s pro-China stance, which became evident after winning an election on an “India Out” campaign the previous year.
In addition to the scenic beauty, Lakshadweep’s tranquility is also mesmerising. It gave me an opportunity to reflect on how to work even harder for the welfare of 140 crore Indians. pic.twitter.com/VeQi6gmjIM

Accusations arose that Modi’s promotion of Lakshadweep was an intentional effort to undermine the Maldives’ tourism industry, heavily reliant on Indian visitors, with approximately 200,000 Indians holidaying there annually.
The situation intensified when members of the Maldivian cabinet, including ministers, launched personal attacks on Modi, labeling him an economic “terrorist” and making xenophobic remarks against him and Indians in general. The incident led to the suspension of three ministers who had posted derogatory comments.
Despite the Maldives foreign ministry distancing itself from the ministers’ remarks, the Indian foreign ministry summoned the Maldives envoy to address the issue. Experts suggested that the incident crossed a line, harming the Maldives’ image and potential repercussions on its economy, heavily dependent on tourism.
The recent remarks against foreign leaders and our close neighbours are unacceptable and do not reflect the official position of the Government of #Maldives.
We remain committed to fostering a positive and constructive dialogue with all our partners, especially our neighbours,…

In response to the controversy, an Indian travel company announced the suspension of all flights and packages to the Maldives while promoting Lakshadweep. Former Maldives President Ibrahim Solih emphasized the importance of maintaining the long-standing friendship between India and the Maldives, while the current president’s visit to China was seen as a diplomatic snub to India.
The incident highlights the delicate balance in the strategic relationship between India and the Maldives, as both countries navigate their ties amid economic interests and geopolitical considerations.
