ISLAMABAD: In a groundbreaking move for Pakistan, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police announced on Monday the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an animal rescue organization. This collaboration aims to establish Police Animal Welfare Services (PAWS), dedicated to providing timely treatment and rehabilitation for abandoned, injured, and sick animals.

The initiative stems from the decision made by Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi to launch “Voice for the Voiceless,” an effort aimed at aiding lost and stray animals. Islamabad has grappled with issues related to stray dogs and cats, sparking controversy over management methods, particularly the culling practices of the Capital Development Authority (CDA).

Residents of the city also encounter wildlife such as wild boars, leopards, and monkeys, often due to their proximity to the Margalla Hills, which boast dense vegetation and a diverse ecosystem.

The ICT Police highlighted the MoU signing with the JFK Animal Rescue and Shelter Organization in their statement, emphasizing the organization’s role in enhancing their capacity to assist these creatures.

“The project entails the establishment of a shelter home, a pet cafe, and a pet hotel for these animals. Citizens embarking on travels or extended journeys can utilize these facilities for their pets, ensuring the animals receive top-notch care from professional caretakers,” the statement said.
