Shahid Aziz, also known as Gullu Butt, was allegedly a supporter of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and gained notoriety in 2014 due to his involvement in a high-profile incident during political protests in Model Town Lahore.
Butt first went viral when he destroyed several cars with a club outside the Pakistan Awami Tehreek office in Model Town. At that time Shehbaz Sharif was the Chief Minister of Punjab.
Workers of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek were protesting against the PML-N government when the police took action against them. During the police action, Gullu Butt was seen on camera smashing vehicles with a large stick in full view of the police.
At least 10 people were killed and more than 5o were injured in the police action.
His actions were widely condemned and became emblematic of the violence and chaos that erupted during the protests. Gullu Butt’s actions sparked outrage among many Pakistanis, leading to his arrest and subsequent trial. He was convicted and sentenced to prison for his role in the violence.
He passed away yesterday in Lahore after a prolonged illness.
