A newspaper report in Sweden has claimed that Kylian Mbappé is being investigated for rape by Swedish police following his visit to Stockholm. However, the football star has denied these allegations.
In a post on X, Mbappé stated that he is a victim of “fake news” published by a Swedish newspaper after his trip to Stockholm. He suggested that there is a connection between the report from Aftonbladet and his upcoming hearing before a French league committee regarding a dispute over unpaid wages with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain.
“FAKE NEWS!!!! It’s becoming so predictable, just before the hearing, almost as if by chance,” Mbappé wrote.
The 25-year-old’s representatives labeled the report a “slanderous rumor” and threatened to take legal action. Mbappé claims he is owed €55 million ($60 million) by the Qatari-owned club.
After Aftonbladet reported that a rape allegation had been made to the police without naming the suspect, Expressen newspaper stated that Mbappé is the one being investigated. “According to information obtained by Expressen, police are investigating the star who is reasonably suspected of rape and sexual assault,” it reported.
In Sweden, police categorize the level of suspicion as either reasonable or probable, with reasonable being the lower level. When contacted by AFP, Mbappé’s representatives said they were unaware of any legal complaint against him.
