The Sindh government has decided to procure 1,000 electric buses for deployment on multiple routes across Karachi as part of the Peoples Green Transport Project.
This initiative was approved during a meeting of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Policy Board held on Friday, chaired by the Chief Minister.
During the session, the board was briefed that the project’s technical evaluation committee had verified its alignment with sustainable urban mobility objectives. It was further noted that the previously appointed transaction advisors would continue their role to expedite implementation and mitigate procurement delays.
Subject to feasibility, the project will proceed under the PPP model through a phased approach, involving the acquisition and operation of 600 twelve-meter and 400 eight-meter electric buses. The operational framework will follow a per-kilometer payment structure over a ten-year concession period, after which the assets will be transferred to the government. Moreover, ten dedicated bus depots will be constructed to support the service.
The board also reviewed progress on the Shahrah-e-Bhutto high-speed corridor, a 39-kilometer stretch connecting Korangi Creek Avenue in DHA to the M-9 Motorway near Kathore.
