The second match of the five-Test series between England and India is ongoing in Birmingham, where on Friday, on the third day of the match, the English wicketkeeper-batter inscribed his name in the record books by scoring a brilliant century in response to India’s first innings total of 587 runs.
England’s wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith played an unbeaten innings of 184 runs against India; he completed his Test century in just 80 balls. With this brilliant innings, Jamie Smith created new history for England.
24-year-old Jamie Smith became the wicketkeeper-batter to play the biggest individual innings for England in Test cricket. He broke the 28-year-old record of former English wicketkeeper Alec Stewart.
Stewart had held the honor of the biggest Test innings by an English wicketkeeper by scoring 173 runs against New Zealand in 1997.
In reply to India’s 587 runs, England’s team was all out for 407 runs in their first innings. Among the English team, Jamie Smith stood out with 184 not out, while Harry Brook also played an innings of 158 runs.
By the end of play on the third day, India had scored 64 runs for the loss of one wicket in their second innings against England and had a lead of 244 runs over the hosts. It is noteworthy that the English team has a one-nil lead in the five-Test series.
