A stray dog fled from the surgical ward of a government hospital in India carrying a bag filled with gold and silver jewellery, along with cash, with the total value of the contents estimated at around 400,000 Indian rupees.

The unusual incident took place between Sunday and Monday night at a government hospital in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh.

Lata Bai Valmiki, a resident of Kayampur, was at the hospital caring for her son, who was receiving treatment for a hand injury. Fearing that the jewellery would not be safe at home, she had brought gold and silver ornaments with her, along with around Rs2,000 in cash. She placed her handbag near the hospital bed.

The bag disappeared sometime between 1am and 6am, prompting the family to contact police.

Head Constable Ajay Solanki was assigned to investigate the case. He reviewed CCTV footage from the hospital wards, corridors and entrances and exits.

The footage revealed that a stray dog had picked up the bag in its mouth and carried it outside the hospital.

Police tracked the dog’s movements using CCTV footage and eventually recovered the entire bag containing the jewellery and other valuables.

The prompt police action enabled the woman to recover her belongings, although the incident has raised questions about security arrangements at the hospital.
