Police have arrested a 70-year-old man for allegedly attempting to marry a 14-year-old deaf and non-speaking girl in Jaganat village, within the jurisdiction of Chota Lahor City Police Station.
Police said an FIR had been registered against the suspect, identified as Habibur Rehman, a resident of Chota Lahor city, and an investigation was under way.
DSP Chota Lahor Fazal Sher Khan said police were alerted by the girl’s mother about the planned marriage. A team, accompanied by female constables, subsequently visited the family’s home and found that the girl was underage and had hearing and speech disabilities.
The suspect was taken into custody, while police also initiated legal proceedings against other individuals allegedly involved in facilitating the proposed marriage.
According to police, preliminary investigations indicated that Rehman intended to marry the girl. Officials said further investigation would determine the circumstances surrounding the planned marriage and identify the roles of others allegedly involved.
Police said legal action would be taken in accordance with the law.
