The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is not going away and is escalating. It may not be possible for Moscow to cool down the flames until it achieves the desired goals. Russia has been engaged in this endeavour for the last 14 years, and President Putin has repeatedly stated his goals, which is simple that Russia should be given a guarantee that Ukraine will not be inducted in NATO and their weapons will not be installed near Moscow.
The concern here is that the effects of the Ukraine-Russia conflict are beginning to reach space and Russia has destroyed one of its space stations with missiles. A war in space could be the most dangerous. Russia and the United States have space weapons and now India is also trying to acquire them. Debris in space is about the size of a golf ball, but its intensity can destroy the space station.
The purpose of space weapons is to send a message to the world that we can take conventional warfare to space. A collision with a satellite would create a dangerous situation because human teams are present in the space stations of the United States and Russia and if debris hits a space station or satellite, the risk of damage would increase.
Russia, United States and NATO are doing everything to prevent the Ukraine conflict from escalating into World War III. This is why the US and NATO have refrained for engaging in any direct military action in Ukraine.
Pakistan is neutral in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and so is our foreign policy. However, the fact remains that Pakistan is China’s military and economic partner and relations with Russia are improving, it is natural for Pakistan to be affected by the regional situation. In the future, partnership with Russia and China could also be beneficial for Islamabad.
It is a matter of concern for Pakistan that India launched a missile within Pakistan’s borders. The Indian missile landed within 124 km in Pakistani territory. There is no precedent in the world for this action. Every country has its own check and balance system and this misadventure or mistake cannot be ignored. Pakistan should take up the issue at the international level with full force as incidents like this can put the peace of the region at stake.
India’s adventurism with nuclear weapons has also raised concerns about how the assets of a nuclear country could be protected if a missile could be fired by mistake while transporting weapons. If an untoward incident occurs, who will be responsible as there are international laws regarding how to deal with it.
