ISLAMABAD: High Court has ordered action against IG Jails and Superintendent in a case pertaining to reports of tortures on inmates. Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court, Justice Athar Minallah remarked that it seemed obvious by going through reports compiled by the Human Rights Commission that prisoners were being subjected to torture in jails.
The Islamabad High Court took up a petition against torture on prisoners in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.
During the course of hearing, the judge appreciated the human rights commission’s report about the treatment meted out to the prisoners in Adiala Jail. He said it seemed that the ‘jail facility had turned into a detention center where prisoners were being subjected to torture’.
On this occasion, the court directed the Federal Ministry of Human Rights to provide staff to the National Commission for Human Rights today so that a complaint cell could be set up in the jail. He also directed the jail authorities not to take any action against jail inmates for providing information.
Justice Athar Minallah passed remarks that the law was very powerful, and action coudl also be taken against the interior minister.
