The top court of the country on Thursday gave a chance to both the government and the opposition to make a consensus on the date of polls in Punjab till April 27. In this perspective it can be said that the ball is now in the court of the political parties of the country.
Politics is the name of table talks and give and take, but unfortunately in Pakistan the political parties have turned their political differences into personal enmity and as a result neither the government and nor the opposition is ready to listen to each other and give space to each other. This situation has dragged the country into a worst political, economic and constitutional crisis.
The issue of Punjab election is merely the result of ego and personal interest-based politics. First the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) dissolved Punjab and Pakhtunkhwa Assemblies only for political gains without thinking that what would be its results for the democracy, and later the government make it a matter of ego to not to hold elections of the dissolved assemblies within 90 days as per the constitution. Eventually the issue reached to Supreme Court. But instead of the top court order the government is not ready to hold elections of Punjab Assembly on May 14.
Now as the court has again handed over the issue to political leadership, it is a test of the statecraft of our politicians that how can they tackle the issue and how they can full the country out of the current uncertain situation. For passing in this test both the government and the opposition need to keep their egos and personal interest aside, make space for each other in their hearts, listen to each other with open minds and adopt a flexible political approach. If they do so it is not difficult to reach a consensus regarding Punjab polls.
