The federal government has approved a major increase in the salaries, allowances and perks of judges of the superior judiciary, along with big changes to their pension packages.
The revised benefits include higher basic salaries and judicial allowances for Supreme Court and High Court judges, as well as new provisions for medical allowances, pension age limits and post-retirement benefits.
Following the approval of a summary by President Asif Ali Zardari, the salaries and perks of Supreme Court judges have been brought at par with those of judges of the Federal Constitutional Court. The basic salaries of High Court judges have also been increased.
The increase in the salaries and allowances of superior court judges has been made effective from December 10, 2025. Supreme Court judges will also receive the financial benefit for the previous period, and arrears resulting from the increase will be paid.
The monthly basic salary of the Chief Justice of Pakistan has been fixed at Rs1.55 million, while the monthly basic salary of other Supreme Court judges will be Rs1.5 million. The basic salary of Supreme Court judges has been increased from Rs1.1 million to Rs1.5 million.
A major increase has also been made in the judicial allowance for Supreme Court judges, which has been raised from Rs1,161,163 to Rs1.5 million. This represents an increase of approximately Rs339,000 per month.
Important changes have also been made to the pension package for Supreme Court judges. The age limit mentioned in one pension-related provision has been increased from 70 to 75 years, while another age limit has been raised from 85 to 90 years. A monthly medical allowance of Rs150,000 has also been approved for Supreme Court judges.
The basic salaries of High Court judges have also been increased, with the new salaries taking effect from July 1, 2026. The monthly basic salary of a High Court Chief Justice has been fixed at Rs1.254 million, while other High Court judges will receive a monthly basic salary of Rs1.205 million.
The salary of High Court judges has been increased from Rs1.095 million to Rs1.205 million, representing a monthly increase of Rs110,000 in their basic salary.
A new facility has also been introduced for those who serve as Chief Justice for more than two years. In case of retirement or promotion to a higher court, they will be allowed to purchase their official vehicle at a concessional price. Retired judges may also be permitted to receive fees for arbitration matters handled by the federal government.
