The Government of Pakistan has announced a reduction in speed limits on motorways and national highways as part of ongoing austerity measures and efforts to conserve fuel.

According to a press release issued on Thursday, the move follows directives from the Prime Minister aimed at promoting energy efficiency and encouraging fuel savings across the country.

Under the new regulations, cars and Light Transport Vehicles (LTVs) on motorways will now have a maximum speed limit of 100 km/h, down from 120 km/h. Passenger Service Vehicles (PSVs) and Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTVs) on motorways will be restricted to 90 km/h, reduced from 110 km/h.

On national highways, speed limits have also been lowered: cars and LTVs are limited to 80 km/h (previously 100 km/h), while PSVs and HTVs must not exceed 65 km/h, down from 80 km/h.

To ensure smooth implementation, the National Highways and Motorway Police have launched a nationwide awareness campaign to inform commuters about the revised limits and promote compliance.

Authorities said the measures are aimed at reducing fuel consumption, enhancing road safety, and supporting the government’s broader energy conservation goals.
