‘Sindhu Ji Goonj,’ also known as ‘Indus Echoes,’ will make its highly anticipated premiere on January 21, 2025, at the Jaipur Film Festival, marking a historic milestone for the Pakistani film industry. This marks the first Sindhi-language film to hit the big screen in nearly three decades, following the release of Himmat in 1997, directed by Samad Sheikh.
Directed and written by Rahul Aijaz, Sindhu Ji Goonj weaves together five poignant stories, each centered around the majestic Indus River, a key symbol of the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage. The river, Aijaz explains, is not just a geographical feature but a metaphor for the enduring spirit and tradition of Sindh.
“The film beautifully intertwines captivating narratives, celebrating the scenic beauty and vibrant culture of Sindh,” said Aijaz.
A unique aspect of Sindhu Ji Goonj is its international collaboration, with production involving three film studios from different parts of the world: Pakistan’s Film N’ Chips Media Productions, Shaam Films, and South Korea’s Big Meta Films. The co-production also includes partners from Bangladesh, underscoring the global appeal and reach of Pakistani cinema. Shamoon Abbasi serves as the executive producer.
The film made its world premiere on January 16, 2025, at Cinepax Cinemas in Karachi’s Ocean Mall. While Pakistani audiences are eagerly awaiting its nationwide release through Anthem Films, an official release date has yet to be announced.
As Sindhu Ji Goonj screens at the Jaipur Film Festival, it heralds a new era for Sindhi cinema, opening doors for greater cultural exchange and demonstrating how regional stories can transcend borders, uniting people worldwide through the power of film.
