The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday allowed PTI President and former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi to contest upcoming elections.
A three-judge bench led by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and comprising Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail and Justice Athar Minallah heard the appeal of the former Punjab CM against the rejection of his nomination papers.
The apex court struck down the decisions of the Election Tribunal and the high court, allowing Pervaiz Elahi to enter the election contest from PP-32 in Gujrat.
Pervaiz Elahi, currently detained at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, had submitted his nomination papers in three National Assembly constituencies — NA-59, NA-64, and NA-69 — and four Punjab Assembly constituencies — PP-23, PP-34, PP-32, and PP-42. Various returning officers (ROs) had rejected his papers.
He had challenged the decision of the ROs at an election tribunal, which upheld the ROs’ verdict. Pervaiz Elahi then moved the Lahore High Court (LHC), which on January 13 upheld the tribunal’s order.
The PTI leader later filed an appeal against the LHC verdict in the Supreme Court, naming the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the election tribunal as respondents.
